Vmware Player - Cent OS 6.4 - Bridge created (brctl) does not work

$

Hi

I am trying to setup the following:

Router1 <=> eth0(XXCentOSXX)eth1 <=> Router2

Where eth0(XXCentOSXX)eth1 is basically a windows 7 machine with a built in gig interface and one USB 2 Ethernet interface. Vmware Player is virtualizing CentOS6.4 ontop of the windows 7 machine.

I create a bridge on CentOS (using brctl), all interfaces are up and i see that, MAC addresses of Router1 and Router2 ethernet interfaces are updated in the bridge. However, when i ping from Router1 to Router2 it does not work.

I have flushed the iptables but still it does not work.

Can someone let me know what i need to check, update in order to make this work?

Thanks,

Fahd.

Re: Help with a script used to gather information in vSphere. (Errors)

Could it be that Get-VM is returning some ghost VMs ?

The errors indicate:

  • the $vm used on Get-VMGuest -VM $vm is empty
  • same for the Get-Datastore

That leads me to suspect there might be a faulty entry in the vSphere environment.

Or perhaps a VM where your account doesn't have the permissions to retrieve the info.

Not sure I understand the remark related to the vCenter.

Did you do a Connect-VIServer before you run the script ?

VSAN permanent disk failure with SSD

Hi I am having an issue with disk failures in Vsan even though the dell server says the disk is fine.  I reboot and the issue goes away for awhile then comes back when I try to create VM's

All servers and disks are new and reporting healthly.  Fresh install of VSAN 6

All servers and drives are in the HCL.  The only issue is vmware lists the wrong firmware for the sandisk optimus ascend SSD.  The one they list does not exist from what I can tell from sandisks website.

3 Dell R630 Servers New

Each server has 1 Sandisk Optimus SSD and 2 Seagate 10k HD's  All New

Vsan network consists of each server with 10GBe intel X540 nics

Switches are netgear XS712T

Any insight would be helpful.  Thanks

Linked Clone Performance Issue

Good Day,

I have linked clones, but have been having major performance issues with them, we are using persona management too.  The issue is, when the user logs in, the first launch of any application takes 4-10 longer then it should.  Once it opens, you close the application, reopen, then it opens in seconds.  This is a huge sore spot for my users.  Has anyone had this issue?  I used the VMware Optimization Tool before deploying, applications were opening nicely, then something changed, not sure what and now everything is so slow on first launch.

Examples:

Adobe Reader take 12 - 15 seconds to open first time.  Second open 2 seconds.

Word take 60-85 seconds to open first time, second open 2-3 seconds.

Any suggestion would be helpful.

Thank you,
Jennifer

I've already heard a rumor (not yet verified) that it doesn't work as a guest in Fusion.  Rest assured that we'll be trying it out this afternoon and investigating as necessary.

Error preparing VXLAN in VCNS

$

Hi

I've been trying to configure VXLAN in a VCNS for a VDS on a vCenter Cluster, but it didn´t work.

I'll list the steps i made for help on troubleshooting:

1) I chose the target vCenter Data Center and clicked on "network preparation"

2) Clicked on "connectivity" and than on "edit".

3) So I chose the target cluster and the VDS, configured the transport VLAN and clicked on "next configure fail over" and "1603" for MTU.

4) Clicked on "finish"

Result: It ran for some time and the behavior that I expected (without a DHCP server in the transport VLAN) was seeing the hosts on VCNS, their "not ready" status and that odd IP address  on vmknic that are assigned to then when there is no DHCP server. With this cenario I might configure a static ip addresses on the vmk interfaces for vteps into the vCenter port group, and click on "resolve" at VCNS manager.

But it´s not what it's happening. The VCNS shows me the hosts, the "not ready" status and "N/A" filled as the vmknic IP Addresses. The "resolve" button is disabled  because the status button is green ("normal" condition), and that status doesn't change when I try to click on that.

The steps I made created the portgroup but no vmk interface for vteps are assigned to the hosts.

I´m already tryed to register vCenter Server again but the result was the same.

Someone has any tip about that problem ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Checking on that further. HBA drivers seems little old. Even if HBA drivers and firmwares are little old can it cause such events? I can see events indicating lost access to volume which indicates to me access to VMFS datastore on FC array has been lost. Also checking on SAN firmware and drivers.

Anything else to check you think?

thank you,

Thank you so much LucD.  The only problem I have doing that is that I want the "Low Disk space on" to be dynamic, I only want that object to show if the space is low.  If I make that change, regardless of the disk space, it will always show "Low Disk Space on", but if the space isn't low, it won't have a value.

I don't want that section showing if the disk space isn't low. Thanks for the help, as always.

A customer of mine want to buy vSOM, and he want to know if that is enough to manage his virtual infrastructure or he also need to purchase vCenter, and why?

Re: Custom log for web client plugin

Hi Ella,

vSphere Web Client loggers are configured here:

.../server/configuration/serviceability.xml

You can try to programmatically configure a new log4j appender:

  FileAppender fa = new FileAppender();   // You can also use ch.qos.logback.core.rolling.RollingFileAppender  fa.setName("FileLogger");  fa.setFile("mylog.log");  fa.setLayout(new PatternLayout("%d{yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSXXX}] [%-5level] %msg %ex%n")); // set your patterns here  fa.setThreshold(Level.DEBUG);  fa.setAppend(true);  fa.activateOptions();  Logger.getRootLogger().addAppender(fa)

I haven't tried this. Please let me know if this works for you.

You can check the Inventory Services Heap Size

Small - 3072 , Medium - 6144 , Large - 12288

vCenter Inventory Service

Configuration file location:

installation_directory\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\conf\wrapper.conf

Heap size parameter:

# Maximum Java Heap Size (in MB)
wrapper.java.maxmemory=heap_size

Thanks for your help.

I don't think I should have to exclude *.vm* files from being scanned.

The log file might indeed be helpful, but I really don't understand most of what I'm reading. I'll keep looking at it, perhaps a light bulb will turn on.

Re: Launching standalone VMRC form a web browser

Remote Console and Chrome have always worked correctly with vSphere Web Client (or any vmrc:// link in a web page). When you install Remote Console it registers itself to handle vmrc:// links. When you click on a link, Chrome pops up an "External Protocol Request" dialog asking permission to launch the application.

The difference used to be in pasting such links into the address bar: I just retested it and Chrome 43 on Windows works as desired--pasting a vmrc:// URL in the address bar launches the application. For this to work, you must have previously clicked a vmrc:// link in a document and set Chrome to automatically launch Remote Console, otherwise you will get web search results for it.

iscsi binding to localhost for converged compute/store devices.

$

Hi,

I was playing around with one of our converged storage and compute supermicro nodes.

Why is it that a vmkernel interface used for binding the iscsi traffic needs to be connected to a virtual switch with a physical uplink when the connection between the host itself and the virtual machine never leaves the host?

If you see the configuration below, this configuration works even though the nic itself is not connected.

When the nic is patched into the network and I look at traffic stats on the switch there appears to be traffic hitting the switch which presumably means the loopback adaptor isn’t been used.

I’m just wondering if there is a way of configuring local host iscsi traffic to re-present the storage back to the host itself (using a virtual SAN such as an OmniOS VM) which can avoid the NIC as being the bottleneck.

Obviously if we needed to present this storage to other nodes in the cluster, then we’d need to create an iscsi target on a vswitch with a physical uplink connected, but what about local traffic?

It doesn’t make sense to me as to why vmkernel interface needs to be bound to a physical nic – if there a way of creating the iscsi config for local host only outside of GUI to do what we want to improve performance?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

cheers

Ashley

Try this one as second parameter to the sendNavigationRequest function:

var MOREF_UID_PREFIX = "urn:vmomi";
var type = 'Datastore';
var value = 'datastore-17';
var serverGuid = '913C774C-6F46-456C-9F10-9A13BE18C612';
var objectId = MOREF_UID_PREFIX + ':' + type + ':' + value + ":" + serverGuid;
